Happy Birthday Hip Hop!

40 years ago today, an event happened at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx that has gone on to shape the world as we know it. Clive Campbell aka Kool Herc DJ’d a back to school party for his sister Cindy, where he demonstrated his new Merry Go Round technique, thus laying the very foundation of Hip Hop, quickly followed by emceeing, B-Boying and graffiti to bring together what are known as the 4 elements, and thus creating not just a musical style but a entire culture that has impacted the world at a societal level.

I was into other music before discovering Hip Hop in 1985, but it is one that has had the longest lasting impact on my life. I started out as a B-Boy, but rapidly moved into DJing and being a MC, with the shortest alliance with graffiti. I still pop and still scratch, and have been known to bomb the odd post-it note while on the phone too, and I can’t see that changing any time soon.
So I raise a glass to the originators, pioneers, and global exponents of Hip Hop in all its forms old and new. I wasn’t born yet when the first party was getting going, thus a tad young too attend, and on the wrong side of the country too. But I’ve made it over to NYC a few times on a pilgrimage to take in the landmarks, which I highly recommend.
Happy Birthday Hip Hop!
